Editor's Letter
A Letter From the Editor
Since I first arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 2004, I have watched this city transform while keeping its magical essence beautifully intact. As a long-time resident and local real estate broker at kw Allende, I've had the privilege of helping many of you find your place in this cobblestoned paradise — and I've learned something fundamental along the way: living in San Miguel is very different from visiting it.
That is why I am thrilled to introduce Expats in San Miguel, a monthly digital publication designed to be your most reliable compass in town. This project isn't just a newsletter — it is a resource built from two decades of local experience, aimed squarely at those who have chosen to call this vibrant, surprising city their true home.
Our goal is simple: to provide a curated, visually stunning experience that saves you time and deepens your connection with the community around you. Welcome to this new chapter.
— Eric Cházaro Cavero
Editor-in-Chief & Broker at kw Allende | Resident since 2004

The Gastronomic Map
New Openings & Hidden Gems
From buzzy new rooftop spots with panoramic views of the Parroquia to beloved neighborhood fondas that have been feeding locals for generations, we review the places worth your appetite and your pesos.
Farm-to-Table & Local Sourcing
San Miguel's culinary scene is increasingly rooted in the Bajío's rich agricultural tradition. We spotlight chefs who are redefining regional cuisine by sourcing directly from local farms and indigenous producers.
Chef Interviews
Every month we sit down with a notable voice in the local food community — the visionary restaurateur, the market vendor who has perfected her tamales, or the mixologist reinventing mezcal culture.
Wellness & Beauty
San Miguel has long attracted those seeking not just a beautiful place to live, but a more intentional way of living altogether. Our wellness section takes a genuinely holistic view — covering the city's exceptional spas, yoga studios, sound healing circles, and meditation retreats, as well as connecting you with the English-speaking physicians, specialists, and alternative health practitioners who serve our international community.
We also celebrate the city's growing beauty scene, from professional hair and makeup artists to skincare specialists and wellness treatments that help you feel your best. In a place where the pace is a little slower and daily life feels more mindful, San Miguel is a natural destination for anyone looking to care for body, mind, and spirit.

New to town? Start by exploring English-speaking doctors and wellness practitioners, then book a spa day or retreat to get acquainted with the city's restorative rhythm.
High-Desert Gardening
by Cristina Mendiola from Terrazart
At 6,200 feet in the semi-arid Bajío, gardening in San Miguel rewards those who understand the climate — and humbles those who don't. Our gardening section is written specifically for this unique environment, offering seasonal guidance you simply won't find in any standard horticulture guide.
🌵 Succulents & Native Plants
Which species thrive in the Bajío's thin soil, frost-prone winters, and intense summer sun? We'll give you a curated planting calendar and species guide each month.
💧 Water Conservation
Water scarcity is a critical and growing issue in the region. We share practical strategies for grey water systems, rainwater harvesting, and drip irrigation to keep your garden thriving responsibly.
🏡 Courtyard Design
The enclosed courtyard is the soul of San Miguel architecture. Learn how to create lush, flowering oases that feel abundant despite the challenges of the high-desert microclimate.
Community Impact
Giving Back: The NGO Spotlight
San Miguel de Allende has one of the most active and well-organized non-profit sectors of any small city in Latin America. Dozens of organizations work tirelessly to address education gaps, food insecurity, animal welfare, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability — all within a community of fewer than 200,000 people. This work is extraordinary, and it deserves a dedicated platform.
Each month, our Charity of the Month feature shines a full spotlight on one organization: their founding story, their current programs, measurable community impact, and — most importantly — exactly how you can get involved. Whether that means volunteering your time, making a financial donation, or simply spreading the word, we make it easy to act.
Living here comes with a responsibility and a gift — the chance to contribute meaningfully to the Mexican community that so generously shares this city with us. This section is our reminder of that privilege.
Insider's SMA: Local Experiences
by Javier Arenas & Melania Ramirez
The Jardín is beautiful — but San Miguel and its surroundings offer far more than what first-time visitors discover. Our Insider's section is dedicated to the experiences that make long-term residents fall in love with this region again and again.
Day Trips Worth the Drive
Vineyard tours through the Guanajuato wine route in Dolores Hidalgo, thermal hot springs etiquette at Escondido Place, and the ancient ruins and painted caves of Cañada de la Virgen — all within an hour of the city center.
Artisan Workshops
Fábrica La Aurora houses some of the region's most talented artists and designers under one historic roof. We connect you with workshops in talavera painting, silversmithing, textile weaving, and more — taught by the masters themselves.
Cultural Immersion
Seasonal events — from the midnight processions of Semana Santa to the harvest festivals of the Bajío — offer profound windows into Mexican cultural life. We provide context, logistics, and the etiquette to participate respectfully.
The Newcomer's Survival Guide
Life Beyond the Visit
by Alan Jacobson
Life Beyond the Visit is a series of curated, hosted conversations for people genuinely exploring the path of making San Miguel home — a rare, unhurried space for real questions and honest stories.
Each session explores a different part of the transition: The Pulse of Daily Life, or what everyday life feels like after the honeymoon phase settles; Navigating the Essentials, from healthcare and banking to the day-to-day logistics that shape comfort; The Power of Connection, building genuine community through NGOs, arts groups, and language exchanges; and The Meaningful Shift, understanding the real change from seasonal visitor to long-term resident.
Guest speakers include residents and professionals — both native Mexicans and expats who have made the leap — offering practical perspective, lived experience, and the kind of honest guidance that only comes from having gone first.

Sessions every 1st & 3rd Thursday · 11:00 AM · Mesones 57, Centro · Seating strictly limited.
Led by Alan Jacobson and a team from kw Allende, the series is designed to feel intimate, welcoming, and deeply useful for anyone considering San Miguel not just as a destination, but as a place to belong.
Living Traditions & Folklore
If you've lived in San Miguel for even a week, you've been jolted awake at dawn by the explosive crack of cohetes — sky rockets launched not in anger, but in celebration. The first time, it's startling. By the third time, it's confusing. But once you understand the why, it becomes one of the most beautiful things about this city.
1
The Alborada
San Miguel's most famous pre-dawn tradition — a raucous, joyful fireworks battle at 4 AM marking the feast of the city's patron saint. Understanding it transforms the noise into music.
2
San Pascual Bailón
A beloved local celebration honoring the patron saint of cooks, filled with dancing skeletons and neighborhood processions — a perfect blend of Catholic tradition and pre-Hispanic ritual.
3
Day of the Dead
Far more intimate and profound than its commercialized image suggests. We guide you through the marigold-lined neighborhood altars and cemetery vigils that make this the most moving night of the year.
4
Semana Santa
Holy Week transforms the entire city into a stage for solemn processions, elaborate sand carpets, and centuries-old religious theater. We provide a neighborhood-by-neighborhood viewing guide.
The Monthly Cultural Agenda
San Miguel punches far above its weight culturally. For a city of its size, the concentration of world-class gallery openings, live jazz performances, literary festivals, film screenings, and theatrical productions is genuinely remarkable — and keeping track of it all can feel like a part-time job.
Our Cultural Agenda is your scannable, beautifully curated monthly calendar. We do the research so you don't have to, filtering the noise to surface the events most relevant to an internationally minded, culturally curious audience. From the intimate piano recitals at Bellas Artes to the vibrant outdoor cinema nights at Parque Juárez, we make sure you never again discover an unmissable event the day after it happened.
Each listing includes venue details, ticket information, accessibility notes, and our honest editorial pick for the "Don't Miss" event of the month.
Sip & Savor: Recipes & Mixology
by David Santos
The Bajío has its own magnificent chapter in Mexico’s culinary story, with monthly kitchen features built around local and seasonal ingredients like tuna, xoconostle, chile ancho, and epazote. Alongside that, our Mixology Corner pairs with celebrated local bartenders to share signature cocktail tutorials rooted in mezcal, raicilla, and wines from the Guanajuato wine route.
Local Ingredients
Each month, our kitchen feature brings a recipe built around a local or seasonal ingredient that most expats walk past at the market without knowing what to do with.
From Market to Table
Recipes are written for home cooks of all levels, with ingredient sourcing tips tied directly to the best vendors at the Tuesday Tianguis or the Tosma organic market.
Mixology Corner
Our monthly partnership with one of San Miguel's celebrated bartenders shares a signature cocktail tutorial, telling the story behind the spirit as much as the drink itself.
Faces of San Miguel
Long-Term Expats
What made someone leave behind a life in Chicago, Toronto, or Madrid and never look back? These intimate profiles explore the moments of decision, the early struggles, and the unexpected joys of building a life in SMA. Every story is different; every story is recognizable.
Sanmiguelenses
The families who have called this city home for generations — the master craftsmen, the market vendors, the teachers, the musicians. Their perspective on how the city has changed, and what they hope stays the same, is essential reading for anyone who wants to be more than a guest here.
Building Bridges
The richest version of expat life in San Miguel isn't lived in a bubble. These profiles are deliberately chosen to spark conversations across cultural lines — to humanize the digital experience and remind us that this community is far more than any one group.
Market Watch: Tianguis & Organic Finds
San Miguel's Tuesday Market — the Tianguis — is one of the most vibrant weekly markets in all of central Mexico, and knowing how to navigate it is a genuine skill. Each month, we also report on what's in season, which vendors offer the best quality, fair market prices through our Price Check feature, and the curated Tosma organic market.
The Tuesday Tianguis
San Miguel's Tuesday Market — the Tianguis — stretches across several city blocks with fresh herbs, handmade furniture, produce, and more.
Price Check
Our Price Check feature helps newcomers navigate the market and avoid tourist rates on key items.
Tosma Organic Market
The Tosma organic market brings small-scale organic farmers directly to the community on weekend mornings.

Best Vendor This Month: Look for Doña Esperanza at the Tuesday Market's east entrance for the region's finest dried chiles and handmade moles — she's been there every week for over 20 years.
Beyond shopping tips, this section is really about celebrating the living agricultural culture of the Bajío — one of Mexico's most fertile regions — and helping expats connect directly with the farmers and producers who sustain this community.
Real Estate & Market Trends
by kw Allende local experts each month
San Miguel’s real estate market is unlike anywhere else in Mexico, and understanding it takes local knowledge that goes far deeper than a listing page. Each month, we go beyond the photos to explore the factors behind plusvalía, the legal steps foreign buyers need to know, and the homes that best reflect life in town.
Neighborhood Trends
We explore what truly drives plusvalía in different neighborhoods, from the historic centro to emerging colonias like Guadalupe and Insurgentes.
Legal Guide for Foreign Buyers
Because San Miguel de Allende is not located near the coast or the border, foreigners do not need a Fideicomiso; they simply need a permit from the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE).
Home of the Month
Each issue features a "Home of the Month" spotlight — a tour of a restored or newly designed property that reflects the colonial aesthetic through its own lens.
Whether you’re considering a purchase, renting long-term, or simply want to understand the value of your current home, this is your monthly briefing from someone who has been in the market for two decades.
Language, Culture & Your Lens
🗣️ Language & Culture Corner
Spanish fluency opens every door in San Miguel — but it's the informal, idiomatic, real Spanish that truly earns you a seat at the table. Each month, our Language Corner introduces a "Slang of the Month" — a phrase, expression, or regional idiom from Guanajuato street culture that will make your neighbors laugh with delight when you use it correctly.
We pair each phrase with cultural context, pronunciation guidance, and a story about where it comes from. The goal is never to mock the language, but to approach it with the humor, humility, and genuine respect it deserves. Because in San Miguel, making the effort to speak — imperfectly, joyfully — is always the right move.
📷 Reader's Lens
Every month, we invite the community to submit their most beautiful, surprising, or quietly perfect photograph of life in San Miguel. No professional equipment required — just a genuine eye and a moment worth preserving.
Selected images are featured in a curated gallery in each issue, credited to their photographer. This is our favorite section to put together, because it reminds us every single month that this community sees this city in a thousand different ways — and every single one of them is extraordinary.

Submit your photos for next month's issue via our community portal. The theme for the upcoming issue is "Golden Hour in the Barrios."
